While Windows To Go is a feature that you will only find in the Enterprise editions of Windows 8, 8.1, and 10, WinToUSB allows you to make use of the same functionality regardless of the edition of the operating system installed on your computer. This useful tool will create a perfect clone of your Windows OS (from version 7 upwards) on a USB Flash drive or external disk so that you can carry a live Windows system with you and work with it on any computer.
With support for Microsoft’s VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) format, this excellent free app is capable of producing a WTG workspace using an ISO, WIM, ESD, SWM, VHD, or VHDX file or a CD or DVD drive as source. It can create this Windows To Go workspace on a Non-Certified WTG USB drive, and – best of all – it supports non-Enterprise editions of Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. If you require further support for creating VHDX-based virtual workspaces, then you’ll have to upgrade the free version to the program to either the Professional or the Enterprise editions.
WinToUSB offers three types of WTG USB creation processes. You can use this tool to create a bootable USB using an image file in any of the formats listed above as source, which will boot both BIOS-based and UEFI-based systems or only one of them, as per your choice. You can also create your USB-based WTG workspace directly from any installation disc on CD or DVD, or – and this is probably the most commonly used of all three – using the current Windows 7 or later OS installed on your computer as the source for your WTG workspace. All three processes are extremely easy to set up and launch, so that not only IT pros can benefit from this free utility.
This application comes also with a few extra tools that are worth noting, too. Thus, you can transform any internal drive on your computer into a Windows To Go drive. Note, however, that this operation will require you to open your computer, take the drive out, and connect it to a USB enclosure in order to convert it into a true WTG drive. Finally, you will also find a useful feature to convert an installation CD or DVD into an ISO image.
WinToUSB takes the Windows To Go functionality further by allowing you to use any edition of Windows 7 or later to create a virtual disk drive containing a fully-functional copy of your OS that you can carry with you to any other computer.
